The Electric Tale of Pikachu is the first official Pokemon manga to be explicitly based on the anime. However, unlike the anime, it takes a more realistic approach to the concept of Ash's journey. I remember buying a few volumes of this as a kid, though I sold them because I had grown out of it. Upon doing more research on it, I'm surprised. There's a lot of neat world building in it (such as confirming that Gym Leaders modulate themselves to put them on the same level as new trainers, something I touched upon in my fan fic), Pokemon actually die (A Haunter kills itself to escape being caught by Ash), the characters have different designs (Ritchie) and personalities (Sabrina), there's realistic violence involving blood, Ash ACTUALLY DEVELOPS, and events play out FAR differently than in the anime (one example being Charmander actually returns to his trainer. And no, said trainer is NOT Damian, and Ash catches an Oddish).

However, it has come to my attention that Electric Tale of Pikachu has the most nudity out of any pokemon manga ever to the point it was censored and altered in both America and Japan, not helped by the fact that the mangaka, Toshishiro Ono, usually makes hentai manga. That...I don't think I need to go into that. However, even with that in mind, I'm sure there are people who genuinely love this manga, and I'm kinda surprised to see it doesn't have a discussion thread. I couldn't find one, and I didn't find anything that said I couldn't start one (if there was and I didn't see it, I apologize in advance), so...here's a discussion thread! It's only four volumes long and only covers the Kanto and Orange Islands arcs, so there isn't much to swallow. I'm debating whether I should read it or not. I want to because of the reasons I mentioned in the first paragraph, but at the same time I don't because of the 2nd paragraph's reasons. I don't like overt nudity and fanservice for the sake of fanservice. Heck, maybe for all I know the manga was intended for older audiences who didn't like the anime for its dependence on status quo. Oh well.

So, with this, discuss The Electric Tale of Pikachu here!

Also, it's confirmed that Jesse and James get married. I'm sure that'll make all you Rocketshippers happy!
