Regice (Japanese: レジアイス Regice) is an Ice-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is a member of the legendary giants along with Regirock, Registeel, Regieleki, and Regidrago.

Biology

Regice is a large, blue Pokémon composed of solid Antarctic ice. Its body is composed of angular crystal-like shapes and its face has an unusual pattern consisting of seven yellow dots in a "+" formation. It has four spikes on its back and its two legs are conical and it balances its entire body on their points. There are three fingers on each of its pentagonal arms.

As depicted in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Regice can move around by floating in the air. Regice cloaks itself in air that is −328 °F (−200 °C), and anything near Regice will become frozen. It can even survive when submerged in molten lava or other extremely hot temperatures. Regice is believed to have been created by Regigigas, and has slept in a glacier for thousands of years since an ice age. It was sealed away in ancient ruins by people in the past.

Regice debuted in The Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon XIV, when Glacia was attempting to open the Island Cave. Together, Steven and Sapphire created a team consisting of four Beldum and Sapphire's Relicanth and Wailord, thus opening up the chamber containing Regice, as well as the other two giants, Regirock and Registeel. Regice used Superpower to stop Groudon and Kyogre from spreading destruction. After the battle, it and the other two giants—left weak and powerless—traveled to the mountains, where they were later caught by Brandon shortly before the opening ceremony of the Battle Frontier.

Brandon used Regice in his battle with Emerald. It defeated Crystal's Cubone, which Emerald had borrowed to use in the Battle Pyramid. However, Regice was subsequently defeated by Emerald's Sceptile and its Iron Tail.

Trivia

Origin

Regice may be based on the golems of Hebrew legend. The legends cast them as servants of higher powers and are said to have writing on their heads. When the writing is removed, the creature would be weakened, or even killed in some legends. Regice's face that consists of seven dots may be based on Braille alphabet which was necessary to use to encounter the legendary giants for the first time in Sealed Chamber. The geometrical shapes that make Regice's body resemble naturally occurring crystals.

The five legendary giants may be collectively themed after historical epochs, with Regice representing the Ice Age.

Name origin

Regice may be a combination of regis (Latin for royal) and ice.
